About ahappyhibiscus

Hi, my name is Akiko and I am "A Happy Hibiscus". After losing my husband to cancer in 2008 and then my corporate electrical engineering job in 2013, I began to rethink life, question what we have been told to believe, seek my true passion, and discover “What makes me HAPPY ?” I found that I had been living a life where I was making choices based on FEAR of judgement instead of LOVE. I found that I was living a life of what my family, friends, society and the media wanted instead of what I wanted. This self awakening has made me into such a happier person. I also love hibiscus flowers and anything with a hibiscus pattern makes me happy. This is why the blog is named ahappyhibiscus. I started this blog so I can share what I have learned from on my path to self awareness and happiness. Please read, comment, and share so you can become "A Happy Hibiscus" too!

  1. One of the happiest experiences that I can remember was my father taking me fishing. Every year my father and his friends would have a private tournament on opening day of trout season. When I turned 13 I was formally invited to join. I recall feeling a strong bond forming from the experience much like that of a right of passage. I will always remember this experience and continue still to honor the tradition now with my group of friends. The experience of that first time lives on in my heart with every first cast.

Hey Akiko! Great article you linked to. Have you heard or read anything from Shawn Achor? I heard about him in another class that I took previously and now I am listening to his audio book, The Happiness Advantage. He has a similar philosophy to the author of this article: happiness comes first, success comes after, instead of the other way around. I bet you would really like him! Here’s a link to his Ted Talk, the first thing I heard from him: http://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work

    Hi Akiko!
Growing up I thought about acquiring things because school was a giant popularity contest and the person(s) with the coolest stuff had an advantage.

This is really great advice for people to not be consumed by the drive for material things. Sure we need things to make our lives easier, but slowing down to evaluate if something is a want or a need is really helpful for reducing stress and strain on the wallet!
